Is this the year I read a book
Is this the year I build a clock
Is this the year I say “Hi” to my neighbor
And learn who lives around my block?
Is this the year I plant a garden
Is this the year I adopt a dog
Is this the year I stop smoking
And get out of my druggy fog?
Is this the year I buy a house
Is this the year I bike, not drive
Is this the year I climb a mountain
Or into the ocean I finally dive?
Is this the year I give leftovers to the homeless
Is this the year I volunteer my time
Is this the year I say “Please” and “Thank You”
And stop watching every dime?
Is this the year I get divorced
Is this the year I say goodbye
Is this the year I fall in love
Or, if not, stop asking why?
Is this the year I lose a friend
Is this the year I gain a brother
Is this the year I have a child
And give a grandkid to my mother?
Is this the year I put down the phone
Is this the year I turn off the t.v.
Is this the year I actually listen to others
And focus not on ME but on WE?
Is this the year I create art
Is this the year I sing more than talk
Is this the year I write a novel
Or I dance more than I walk?
Is this the year I meet the President
Is this the year I meet the Pope
Is this the year I stop living in fear
And instead choose to live in hope?
Is this the year I stop worrying all the time
Is this the year I live in the now and here
Is this the year I embrace who I am
And stop saying “Maybe I’ll do it next year”?
